Sierra Nevada College presents an evening with Tim O’Brien on Friday, September 21 at 7 p.m. at the college campus. O’Brien is this year’s featured speaker in SNC’s “One Book, One Campus” program. This year, all incoming students and college faculty read the author’s The Things They Carried, O’Brien’s 1990 story collection about the Vietnam War. The book, whose title story received the National Magazine Award, was named one of the twenty best books of the last quarter century by the New York Times.

This program is made possible by grant funding from the Library Services and Technology Act, the Nevada State Library and Archives, the Institute for Museum and Library Services, and Nevada Humanities. The Community Read of The Things They Carried has been expanded this year to include the entire Incline Village/Crystal Bay community, with Incline Village High School students and local book groups reading the book and joining the discussion. Copies of the book are available at the Incline Village Public Library and Sierra Nevada College’s Prim Library.

In addition to the free presentation by Tim O’Brien on Friday, September 21, the author will hold a writing workshop ($50) the following morning from 10am-12pm. Please contact the SNC Registrar’s Office to register for the Saturday morning workshop. Contact Jane Rainwater at 775.881.7435 or email her at Contact Librarian Betts Markle at or visit Common Read to learn more about the program.
